Living In Alaska
Living in Alaska is the dream of many who come here from the “lower 48″ or from other countries. They long to find their place in a land that is vast and wide open, in every way.
For those who want to challenge themselves to “make it” in a place that is at once astonishingly beautiful as well as sometimes unforgiving in the extremes it poses to human plans, Alaska fits the bill.
Those who choose to live in the great state of Alaska are a special breed. They tend to be individualists, as rugged as the land itself. But they also understand that where nature’s forces reign supreme, it is more important than anywhere else for neighbors to help one another and to work together to achieve their dreams.
Is living in Alaska part of your dream? If so, have you thought about exactly where in Alaska you would prefer to live and work? If you’re coming here for a job, that will largely determine where in this big state you will settle. But if you have choice in the matter, you will want to carefully consider where you would most like to take up residence.
Many Alaskans do choose to live in the wilderness, perhaps going so far as to build a log cabin or other home by the sweat of their brow and personal muscle power. Then there are the widely scattered villages, the small towns, and the cities. Some towns are deep in the Alaskan interior, often nestled in valleys surrounded by breathtakingly majestic mountains. In return for enjoying such
grandeur, such places may experience the coldest cold and the deepest snows that the state has to offer. Nothing wrong with that — some folks thrive in such an environment.
Towns and small cities on the coast have weather that is at least somewhat moderated by the sea currents circulating up from warmer latitudes. These are also definitely the type of place you would want to live in Alaska if such sports as sea fishing and kayaking appeal to you.
In the cities of Alaska — the largest being Anchorage — you will have ready access to the urban amenities you might enjoy anywhere else in the United States. However, you will still be a short drive from the wild outdoors and nature in all its splendor. Moose in Alaska do indeed sometimes wander into the city, and bald eagles — a rare sight in most of the U.S. — are often seen soaring over urban
skylines.
This website was started in conjunction the Best Jobs in Alaska site. Whereas that site is to help folks learn about the types of work available in Alaska, this one focuses on specific locations in the state where you might want to live. Every town and city has its benefits and drawbacks. Through articles, videos and other media, we will strive to provide an honest, objective picture of each of these places.
Living in Alaska is adventure, to be sure. May your adventure start here.
